Our Mission

NUULR is committed to nurturing a dynamic space where legal ideas flourish, engaging the Northeastern University community and a wider audience in discussions on pertinent legal, societal, and ethical issues. We believe in the transformative power of well-crafted writing to instigate thought-provoking conversations, enriching perspectives, and fostering critical thinking. Our aim is to cultivate a culture rooted in objectivity, critical analysis, and interdisciplinary exploration, establishing NUULR as a premier hub for undergraduate legal discourse and scholarly fervor. Everything we do is guided by our values of Rigor, Collaboration, and Culture.

Rigor

NUULR is grounded in a commitment to rigorous legal scholarship across both its Print and Digital Editions. Writers develop substantial, research-driven articles—whether long-form pieces for the Print Edition or more flexible, topic-driven work for the Digital Edition—while editors work closely to refine arguments, strengthen structure, and ensure precision in citation. Through multiple layers and weeks of review and consistent feedback, each piece is held to a high standard, challenging members to think critically and write with clarity and discipline.

Print Edition

What is the Print Edition?

NUULR’s Print Edition is our flagship publication, featuring in-depth, law review–style articles that engage rigorously a theme to make complex legal arguments.

Digital Edition

What is the Digital Edition?

NUULR’s Digital Edition features concise, op-ed–style legal articles that allow writers to explore timely issues across a wide range of topics with flexibility and creativity.

Collaboration

At NUULR, the writing process is built around consistent, hands-on collaboration. Writers meet weekly with their assigned editors to discuss drafts, receive detailed feedback, and refine their arguments, while Masthead remains actively involved throughout the process by reviewing work and providing additional guidance. This multi-layered approach ensures that each piece is shaped through ongoing dialogue and collective input, creating an environment where ideas are strengthened over time and every member contributes to the final product.

Weeks 1-2

Introduction to Legal Writing

The first two weeks of the semester are dedicated to providing writers the background, knowledge, and skills necessary to write a law-review-style paper. Topic formulation also happens at this stage.

Weeks 3-10

Weekly Editor Meetings

Writers meet with their two assigned editors in-person at our weekly meetings to discuss their writing. Editors leave feedback on your article in advance of every meeting.

Throughout Writing Process

Masthead Involvement

Masthead collaborates closely with writers and editors to ensure notes are held to the highest standard. Writers can expect their paper to be reviewed by as many as five people.

Weeks 11-12

Publication

Masthead conducts final editing and Print and Digital articles are published.

Culture

NUULR is defined by a close-knit and intellectually engaged community of students who are genuinely invested in each other’s growth. Beyond the writing and editing process, members connect through social events, professional development opportunities, and ongoing conversations about law, policy, and current issues. The organization brings together students from a wide range of academic backgrounds, creating a space where diverse perspectives are valued and thoughtful discussion is encouraged. This culture of mutual support and shared curiosity makes NUULR not only academically rigorous, but also a rewarding and collaborative community to be a part of.

How to Apply

Applying to NUULR is a straightforward process designed to assess your interest in legal writing and your fit within the organization. We open applications twice a year for writer roles, editor roles, or both, depending on the needs of the organization. Applicants are asked to submit a writing sample (preferably argumentative and research-based), a resume, and a short answer response related to their top choice position. While not required, applicants may also include a referral from a current NUULR member. In addition, attendance at our Launch Party is required to complete your application, as it provides an opportunity to learn more about the organization and connect with current members. Applications are reviewed holistically, with an emphasis on clarity of thought, engagement with ideas, and a demonstrated interest in contributing to NUULR’s collaborative writing process.
